There is nothing quite like pulling into the paddock ahead of a track day. You’ve prepped your kit, checked your tyre pressures, and you’re ready to lean into a day of proper, uninterrupted riding. But if your bike feels skittish under heavy braking, wallows through fast corners, or fights you every time you try to hit the apex, your chassis is trying to tell you something.

A good track day suspension setup is the difference between fighting your bike for six sessions and riding with total, effortless confidence. You don’t need a paddock full of telemetry engineers to get your bike working for you, either.

Here is a straightforward guide to motorcycle suspension tuning for the track, covering the essentials of sag, damping, and knowing when it’s time to call in the experts.

Step 1: Setting Your Base

Before you touch a single clicker or damping screw, you must get your sag right. Sag is the amount your bike compresses under its own weight (static sag) and with you sitting on it in full kit (rider sag).

Think of sag as setting the middle baseline of your suspension’s movement. If your sag is wrong, your geometry is wrong, and no amount of clicker twisting will fix it.

Expert Tip: Always measure rider sag with your full kit on, helmet, boots, leathers, back protector, and all. An extra 10 kg of riding gear completely shifts your preload balance!

Step 2: Fine-Tuning Damping 

Once preload and sag are set, you can tune how fast the suspension moves using your damping controls.

Compression Damping (The “Stroke” Control)

Compression controls how quickly the fork or shock squashes down when you hit a bump or load the bike under braking/acceleration.

Rebound Damping (The “Return” Control)

Rebound controls how quickly the suspension bounces back to its resting height after being compressed.
