Why you need steering dampers on your bike

Friday, May 04, 2018

As a bike rider, you’ve more than likely experienced a wobble, or tank-slapper as some like to call it. If you haven’t, there’s still time. That horrible moment when your front end becomes uncontrollable is pretty common and it usually ends in being thrown off your bike.

It usually happens after your front wheel hits back down on the road after being air born. Or, when your front wheel touches an uneven surface, or when changing direction quickly. Your steering mechanism attempts to correct itself and over corrects. This results in an undesirable and unexpected twisting of your front end.

Steering dampers are fitted to combat these behaviours providing your bike with more stability. When fitted correctly, a steering damper should never make your steering heavier and shouldn't result in any disadvantages.

In any track type a steering damper can help your front end stay on track and help prevent rider fatigue.

At MH Suspension, we have a selection of Ohlins steering dampers perfect for road and off road bikes.

We’re experts in motorcycles and aim to make every ride a better one. Making things safer, easier and more comfortable through suspension services and other customisations is our goal.

If there’s any part of your bike that you need adjusting, fitting or just checked please don’t hesitate to get in touch. We’d love to have a chat and let you know how we can help your bike perform better.
